Fitness Friends was inspired by a friend of ours who wanted to start jogging. None of her friends were intersted in exercising with her and, like many women, she didn't want to brave the streets alone! The local running club was too serious for what she wanted so we came up with the idea of a website where people can meet up to exercise together.
The team consists of a small group of friendly modern pentathletes based in Bath who recognise the fitness needs of others, from recreational sports people to elite athletes. All of us understand the value of being healthy and physically acitive. We all have a strong background in sport at a high level and appreciate the benefit of training with others. We also acknowledge that for people who have not always been invloved with sport or physical recreation it can be difficult to start. We hope that the FFNetwork will give people the opportunity to meet others with similar fitness ambitions.
Charlie Unwin is a sport and exercise psychologist (performancelegacy.com), a subject for which he is passionate after representing Great Britain as a modern pentathlete at the World Championships. Charlie also served in the British Army for 7 years as an officer in the Royal Horse Artillery. This included operations in Iraq as a platoon commander. Now that he has taken a back seat from elite sport, he is enjoying the opportunities offered by the FFNetwork to meet other enthusiasts in sports such as triathlon, golf, tennis, and squash.
Giles has spent the last decade competing at the highest level as a modern pentathlete for Great Britain. He has represented his country numerous times at European and World Championships. Having been forced to retire due to knee problems he has been able to maintain his passion for sport by co-developing the FFNetwork as well as coaching. He still thoroughly enjoys his sport at a recreational level, especially the odd round of golf in his spare time.
Lindsey is currently training for modern pentathlon. She won a bronze medal at the Junior World championships in 2003 and was 7th at Senior European championships in 2004. You can find out more about her sporting achievements by visiting her website at lindseyweedon.co.uk. Lindsey graduated from the University of Bath a year ago with a 2:1 in Sport and Exercise Science. She takes an interest in most sports and has a love for climbing and skiing.
Jack is the latest recruit to the FFNetwork team. He graduated with a BSc(Hons) in Politics and Economics before building a successful career in the British Army as an Officer in the Commando Gunners with whom he served in Iraq. He still found time to play hockey to a high standard representing the Army. Also a keen skier, he captained his Regiment's team. Now based in London, he has seen at first hand how difficult it is to stay fit when working long hours, making him all the more passionate about the Fitness Friends Network.
